Murt named Chairman of Mental Health Subcommittee
HARRISBURG—Rep. Tom Murt (R-Montgomery/Philadelphia) has been named Chairman of the Subcommittee on Mental Health within the Human Services Committee.

“This is a great honor and an invaluable opportunity,” Murt said. “I remain dedicated to making sure the state is protecting the most vulnerable of us, and that the programs dedicated to helping children are fulfilling their mission.”

Murt has also committed himself to changing the name of the Department of Public Welfare to the Department of Human Services.

“Pennsylvania is the only state to call its human services ‘welfare,’” Murt said. “It’s time that we sync up with the other 49 states and our own 67 counties which have eliminated the term ‘welfare.’ A name change will not change a culture alone, but it is a means to an end. If we want a department that truly places a priority on helping Pennsylvanians live more meaningful, independent lives, then change the name to reflect the mission. If we want to reduce or eliminate welfare in Pennsylvania, let’s start with the name.”

For the 2013-14 legislative session, Rep. Tom Murt has been reappointed to the Human Services and Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness committees, and sits on the Urban Affairs Committee and Gaming Oversight committees.
