Murt praises Corbett for Making Hard Choices, Will Study Funding for Special Needs
3/8/2011

Rep. Tom Murt (R-Montgomery/Philadelphia) praised Gov. Tom Corbett for crafting a budget that makes hard choices, but promised to study Corbett’s plan to make sure programs for adults with special needs are protected.

“I applaud Governor Corbett for putting forward a budget that makes difficult choices.  It is now time for the members of the legislature to do our jobs and make sure the cuts outlined by the governor target waste and redundancy in state government,” Murt said. “We obviously want to slice the fat from the budget but not from critically important programs and services.  I especially wish to ensure that adults with special needs are protected and that we include in the budget resources for school programs that are making a difference in Pennsylvania.  This budget proposal is a start to what will be a long and challenging process.”

Corbett presented his $27.34 billion spending plan to the legislature on Tuesday.  Faced with a massive budget deficit, Corbett proposed a 3.1 percent cut in General Fund spending. Corbett balances his budget without resorting to massive tax hikes.

The House will begin hearings on the budget next week.
