—Rep. Tom Murt (R-Montgomery/Philadelphia) will host a community meeting to discuss how stress affects teenagers, symptoms of depression, what is considered a crisis and the warning signs of suicide. Topics will also include bullying and how bullying leads to stress and anxiety.
The meeting is Sept. 14, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Hatboro Community Church, 730 Preston Lane in Hatboro
“We must do everything we can to stem the tide of depression and suicide among our children,” Murt said. “This event will give parents the tools to recognize the telltale signs and find a path to help.”
The presentation will be geared to both parents and students and will be run by Sheila Gillin, LCSW, clinical director of Minding Your Mind, and Melissa Hopely Rice, also from Minding Your Mind.
Minding Your Mind is a not-for-profit organization whose primary objective is to provide mental health education to adolescents, teens and young adults, as well as parents, teachers and school administrators. Its goal is to break the silence and to reduce the stigma and destructive behaviors often associated with mental health issues. The organization strives to move away from crisis-based response to prevention through education.
Call Murt’s office at (215) 674-3755 with any questions.
